MARITECH YOYO'S A GREAT SUCCESS AT OI08 It was really nice to see so many faces old and new at our stand at OI08. The Maritech flashing YoYo seemed to be a great success with many freelancers and clients showing us their 'YoYo Skills'. It was nice to see that we are all children at heart!!
MARITECH SURVEYOR ROWS FOR CHARITY Fugro Survey Aberdeen asked their survey vessels if they would like to enter a team of ten rowers to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support Sponsored Virtual Row 2008. Amongst other company vessels the Fugro Discovery agreed to enter a team. One of its team was Maritech's surveyor Barry Earl. As an incentive to its teams Fugro offered £150 to the first of it's vessels past the post and another £150 to the team that raised most sponsorship. The row begun on 14th January 2008. There were three categories; Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced. Although only a couple of 'Team Discovery' were regular gym and rowing machine enthusiasts the team entered as an intermediate, requiring a total distance rowed of 1100 miles - the distance by sea from Land's End, around the top of Scotland, to Aberdeen where the Macmillan Cancer Support is based. The team begun enthusiastically but with trepidation as some were not exactly in peak physical condition! All members of the crew were represented from the Marine and Survey staff. As well as the Captain and Party Chief were Surveyors, Deck officers and Survey Engineers. Not least amongst the team was the oldest and shortest legged Surveyor, Barry (Baz) Earl, of Maritech. After just two days the team had already rowed 190 miles. Baz was last in the team with just over 12 miles completed. Perturbed by this and his pride dented he decided to try and improve. By day four the team had reached 331 miles and now with 30 miles clocked up by Baz he strode into 5th place in the team. This competitive spirit spurred on all team members not wishing to be outdone by their colleagues. Not least at the leader positions where an intense rivalry built up between the Senior surveyor, 2nd mate and the Azerbjani Survey Engineer. If one rowed 6 miles in a stint then the next rower did 9 miles and finally the top three were regularly clocking up an amazing 12 miles in one go. Crew change came on 23rd January, and not a minute to soon for Baz! At this stage the team passed over to another set of rowers from the relieving crew. Already the first shift had clocked up an extremely impressive 683 miles in just 9 days. Baz was really pleased to have held onto his fifth place and contributed 63.5 miles of the total. He was especially delighted to have rowed further than a fellow surveyor who was younger than his daughter. Six days later, on the 29th January, the equally strong on coming crew had passed the finishing line. So impressed were the company by the rowers efforts they immediately decided to add a further £500 to the vessel with the highest sponsorship. 'Team Discovery' were first past the post of all 16 competitors, other company vessels, other offshore vessels, and especially pleasing - half a dozen rowing clubs. Baz mentioned his involvement to Maritech and was delighted to receive a £100 cheque from them in addition to money Jessica and Oliver his, long suffering, 'kids' had contributed. In addition to finishing first 'Team Discovery' raised by far the highest sponsorship of £3271. All team members are extremely grateful to the kind generosity of those who contributed both as individuals or as companies. In total the three Fugro vessels raised over £5000.
